Around midday today I flew into Chiang Mai in Thailaand's North. Having visited this country so many times now, it would have been crazy to again visit Thailand not visit this area, each time I've come back I leave and kick myself for not making the journey up the map.The previous 4 nights were spent in Patong on Phuket Island on Thailand's West coast off the Stright of Malacca. These 4 nights were epic..! Geez you meet alot of people when you travel alone, some how you just find an extra element of confidence in approaching new people, I think a few Tiger beers thrown in might also help too. (Don't worry mum, not too many)I wanted to use this first few days to just let my hair down, relax and get into holiday mode, I partied it up with some cool people, a real mix of sorts. A Sweedish bar owner called Daniel, he's Sweedish not the bar, the bar itself is distinctly Patong..! Some cool people from Norway and Demark, the odd Aussie and Brit here and there and ofcourse some crazy Thai kids that were lots of fun.Now that I've forgotten what work is and I've adjusted to things on the road, it feels good to be here in Chaing Mai, it's the real Thailand far from the lights and noise in Phuket. I feel like a real backpacker today and the splashing cash on expensive food, drinks accommodation and private taxis are some of the many things that have now ended. It's official, I'm a tight arse backpacker and I may even stop showering so I fit in with my fellow backpackers or "packers" as one bloke from Australia advised me yesterday. On first impressions, Chiang Mai does appear to be cheaper than in the Southern tourist hotspots, as I'm writing this update I'm eating a spicy and sour prawn soup that was only 30 Thai Baht, something like this on Phuket would be 80 to 100 Thai Baht. Even looking at a massage place across the road I can see a sign that says 1 hour Thai Massage is 200 Baht while in Bangkok and furtherr South this would range from 300 to 600 Baht depending. For all the blokes reading this wondering if the prices I've mentioned for massages include, what was offered to me a few days ago as, "Sir, you want willy willy" Well the answer is no and so was mine when it was offered at the 45 minute mark of a 1 hour session. I'm not sure if I declined just because I wasnt interested or because I had a very sneaky suspicion that she, or it, may have had a "willy willy" of her own.In terms of the costs here, you can roughly look at 100 Thai Baht as being around 3 Aussie Dollars so a prawn soup for around $1 is amazing, it's tasting pretty good too I must say.Below are a few select photos of just some of the many happenings so far, some of the business names always make me laugh. The pic of me and the crazy looking guy is the Sweed I mentioned earlier. The tattoo looked even more amazing in person, it was being worn by an Aussie tattoo artist who now lives in Thailand. The hard to read writing actually says "From Oz With Love - Nic" I wrote it on the ceiling of the bar, it was a real stretch even for a tall guy like me. Finally there is a photo of me dacing on the bar.Because I've been to Phuket so many times, I didnt really bother taking many photos but now that I've moved on I'll be sure to have the camera at the ready at all times. Thanks to everyone who has sent me hellos etc via facebook and e-mail, keep em coming. I miss you all and I Love You Long Time!Nic.
